# Filter items

Filters show only items that match criteria such as status, publish state, dates, or collection field values.

## Show the filter bar

Click the **Toggle filters** button in the collection toolbar to show or hide the inline filter bar.

## Add a filter

#### Open the filter bar

Click **Toggle filters** if the filter bar is hidden.

#### Click Filter

Click the **Filter** button to open the add-filter popover.

#### Choose a property

Search or browse the list. Pick a metadata field or a collection schema field.

#### Set the operator and value

Choose an operator (such as **Is**, **Contains**, **Is on**, **Is empty**) and enter or select a value.

The filter appears as a chip in the filter bar showing a summary of the condition.

## Built-in metadata filters

You can filter by these standard properties:

* **Name**
* **Slug**
* **Item ID**
* **Status**
* **Publish State**
* **Archive**
* **Draft**
* **Published** (date)
* **Updated** (date)
* **Created** (date)

Use **Is** for an exact Item ID, or **Contains** when you only have part of it. Slug and Item ID filters also work in an [advanced filter](/advanced-filter).

## Collection field filters

Wicked CMS also builds filters from your collection schema field types, including:

* Text fields: **Contains**, **Starts with**, **Ends with**, **Is empty**, etc.
* Option fields: **Is**, **Is not**, **Is set**, **Is empty**
* Switch fields: **Is**, **Is not** (Yes/No)
* Date fields: **Is on**, **Is after**, **Is before**, **Is between**, **Is set**, **Is not set**
* Reference fields: **Is**, **Is not**, **Is set**, **Is empty**
* Multi-reference fields: **Contains**, **Does not contain**, **Is set**, **Is not set**

## Filter operators

Common operators include:

| Operator                            | Use for                                              |
| ----------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| **Is** / **Is not**                 | Exact match                                          |
| **Contains** / **Does not contain** | Partial text match                                   |
| **Starts with** / **Ends with**     | Prefix or suffix match                               |
| **Is empty** / **Is not empty**     | Blank or non-blank values                            |
| **Is on**                           | Date falls on the selected day                       |
| **Is after** / **Is before**        | Date is after or before the selected day             |
| **Is between**                      | Date falls between a start and end day               |
| **Is set**                          | Field has a value (presence)                         |
| **Is not set**                      | Field has no value (date and multi-reference fields) |

## Manage active filters

* Click a filter chip to edit its condition
* Remove individual filters from the chip menu
* Click **Clear all** when two or more filters are active to remove every filter at once

## Advanced filter

For multiple conditions joined with **And** or **Or**, or for more than one condition on the same field, use [Advanced filter](/advanced-filter). In the Filter picker, click **Add advanced filter**.

## Combine with search

Filters work together with [search](/search-items). Items must match both the search query and all active filters.
